Gotcha Day

We picked up Lydia this morning. It was pretty rough, very emotional. Neither Rob nor I got much sleep last night, therefore, we are very tired. Lydia's foster mom was present as well, and this made it hard on Lydia - she would have nothing to do with us. I know that this is very hard on her foster mom, too for it is very apparent she loves Lydia very much and has done such a wonderful job with her – we included her in our prayers this morning to start the day. Lydia counted to 100 in Chinese for our guide, Grace. She seems happy now, loves to laugh and talk, and is very expressive. We know that there are many rough days ahead and are curious as to how she will react tonight. She told our guide that she wanted to go home. Grace told her that she was going home and she replied, "No, I want to go to my China home." Our guide says that she speaks like an adult – very fluent in Mandarin for her age. When asked if she likes to dance, she replies, "yes, but it's hard to dance in my red boots." (She came to us in very fashionable red boots – with rhinestones). It’s hilarious; she thinks that we understand her! We just shake our heads in agreement. It is very apparent that she has hydrocephalus (even more so than we’d expected) and her little eyes are crossed. When she colors, she holds her book very close to her face, and we are anticipating a significant vision problem due to her strabismus. Even so, she is very precise and stays within the lines when she colors. The boys have been simply awesome with her. They are being very attentive and she loves the attention from all of us. Thank you for your prayers, for God has been gracious!!
The weather here has been awful today – rain and wind this morning, followed by even higher winds this afternoon with a Chinese dust storm outside. The high today was in the lower 50’s, but we were instructed to stay in the room today, anyway, to bond. The rooms are uncomfortably cool, but when the family accompanying us had the hotel manager contacted, they were told it’s “out of season” to have the heat on! We get a chuckle, too, each time we walk into the bathroom and see the “Be Careful of Landslide” signage which depicts a man slipping on a wet floor. We’re having the experience of a lifetime in so many ways!
We're hopefully going to bed early tonight and sleeping more than 3 hrs. I'll try to post more pictures tomorrow.
Love,
Detra

Dear Scheeles,

It is so wonderful to be able to follow your journey by blog! Our hearts and prayers go out to you all, Lydia, and the foster family she leaves behind. My prayer is that the love of your wonderful family will soon speak to Lydia's heart. Your church family cannot wait to welcome your new family with Lydia home.

Detra,

We are so excited for your family. The transition may be rough, and God will be with each of you through every step of the way. How encouraging is that! We will keep each of you in our prayers that God will give Lydia and her foster family peace and that He will give each of the Scheeles strength and faith during this transition. We cannot wait to meet Lydia!

Detra,
Thank you for the update. What a day! I can understand the great emotion and joy that all of you must be feeling. When I pictured y'all doing this, I didn't think of many of the difficulties you would experience along the way, things like language. Don't know why I wouldn't, but just absentmindely forgot that she is 6 and would speak Manderin. I will pray! And I pray that the rest of your time there will be a blessing and a great time of bonding. Tell the boys we missed them at Ultimate last night.

Dear Family---
You have been in my thoughts & prayers soooo much----I will not try to even pretend that I comprehend any of the issues before you, but I must bring to mind my favorite scripture, 1 Corinthians 13--"Love is patient & kind----It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." I am really enjoying your blog and anxious to meet Lydia.

Dear Scheeles,
Thank you again for this update. I cannot imagine the thoughts & emotions running through everyone's heads, yours & hers. We are praying for sweet Lydia & her adjustment. She is receiving such a great blessing by having a forever family--and it IS forever, that is her great blessing. And you already are showering her with Jesus' love. She will ultimately come to know that & love you in return. Our prayers are with you!
Also, the bits about the boys are so great; they will be forever formed by this example of love & mercy! They are such loving guys already.

Dear Rob, Detra, Peter and Samuel,
I love reading your updates. I will be praying that the LORD will prepare sweet Lydia's heart to leave her family and her China. Your T-shirt says it all. We are all adopted into the family of Christ. I will pray for your travels home (and that your pepto bismol continues to do it's job!!! Ha ha!!) I look forward to meeting Lydia! Love to you all!!

Dear Scheele Family (now 5),
Lisa and I are speechless. We are excited to meet Lydia and help welcome her into the community. We are so proud of the boys, and we clearly knew they were big brothers in waiting. What a wonderful thing to have two older brothers. We await more reports from China, and pictures!!
I know you can't wait to get to Guangzhou and Shamian Island. Our prayers are with your family and Lydia's foster family, your guide, and all the other families in your group.
